About the event

Join Jamie Watson, LMFT, RPT-S, and Dawn Williamson, LCSW, RPT-S for Play Therapy Basics... and Beyond!, a transformative 4-day intensive play therapy workshop covering theoretical and historical components of play therapy, and the application of play therapy including modalities, techniques, and experiential skill development. Join in harnessing the power of play for healing, growth, and profound therapeutic connection!

Learning Objectives

By the completion of this 30-hour workshop, participants will be able to:

  • List and compare five essential theories, theorists, and organizations that helped to shape the field of play therapy

  • Identify and discuss one’s own theories of practice

  • Utilize a working knowledge of Child-Centered Play Therapy, Jungian Analytic Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy, Gestalt Play Therapy, and Adlerian Play Therapy as applied to case examples and demonstrate effective use through role plays

  • Recite a working knowledge of the history of the Association for Play Therapy by way of APT History Speaks and discussion

  • Identify both the founders of Play Therapy and the Association for Play Therapy and describe how to become an APT member, Registered Play Therapist, School-Based Play Therapist, and/or Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, and know how to become active in local state branches of APT

  • Identify and differentiate between developmental stages of children, adolescents, and young adults, and apply to a case study

  • Describe a working knowledge of the history of play and types and functions of play across the lifespan, and discuss relevance to the field of play therapy

  • Identify and differentiate the stages of the play therapy process and apply this to work with individuals, groups, and families demonstrated through the lens of cultural and social diversity and ethical and professional practices

  • Assess and rate play therapy rooms for awareness and welcoming of cultural and social diversity

  • Critique the importance of self-care and wellness for the play therapist

  • Demonstrate basic play therapy skills as demonstrated through role play


Presenters:

Jamie Watson, LMFT, RPT-S™

Jamie is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Oregon and Washington and the Mental Health Therapy Director at Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies, Inc. in Portland and surrounding areas. At the University of Western States, Jamie teaches Play Therapy, Pre-Practicum, and Human Growth & Development in the Graduate Department of Counseling. Jamie is a Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor™ and is also recognized by the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists (OBLPCT), the Washington Department of Health, and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) as an Approved Clinical Supervisor. She also has additional training in Foster and Adoptive Family Therapy, Parent-Child Interactive Therapy (PCIT), and Trauma-Focused CBT, specializing in child attachment and trauma. Jamie currently serves as president of the Oregon Association for Play Therapy (ORAPT), and has been involved with the Board and ORAPT in some capacity for over a decade.


Dawn J Williamson, LCSW, RPT-S™

Dawn Williamson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor™ in private practice, specializing in developmentally informed practice across the lifespan. Dawn also teaches part-time at the Portland State University (PSU) School of Social Work (her alma mater).  Dawn provides workshops both locally within the US as well as internationally on a variety of topics, including play therapy.  Dawn holds postgraduate certificates in Therapy with Adoptive Families (PSU), Psychological Trauma: Effective Practice and Treatment (University of Washington), Counseling with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Western Oregon University), Animal Human Health (University of Denver), and is a LEGO Serious Play Certified Facilitator, Vancouver, BC. Dawn has been involved with the Oregon Association for Play Therapy (ORAPT) and the Board in some capacity throughout her career and is the recipient of the APT 2017 Award of Excellent (International Association for Play Therapy).


Cancellation and grievance policy: Registration is required. Please let us know if you are unable to attend. There is a cost for participation and so, therefore, there is no refund if canceled within 7 days of the event. A $25 cancellation and refund fee applies. If you have questions or concerns about this or any training provided by the presenters, please contact our co-sponsor. There will be an evaluation to complete after each day to obtain CEs.
